Ippocalyptica I had never heard of Madder Mortem until last week, and was skeptical at first given that most elements of progressive and doom metal have traditionally turned me off. However, it only took five minutes of actually listening to immediately fall in love with Marrow, as this takes the best parts of several genres and combines them into a cohesive and very compelling package that is neither expressly progressive nor doom metal. The clean vocals are phenomenal, with the harsh vocals not being that far behind in quality. Songs transition effortlessly from melancholic to furious, from serene to totally kinetic. Most of all, though, every song here is highly evocative of some primal stirring that resides within each of us, making us feel something different as the album progresses, but always making us feel. It also heavily reminds me of The Gathering’s Mandylion and especially Nighttime Birds, two incredible albums. Do not ignore this one. Favorite track: Until You Return.

knightradiant This album is my favourite one today! Your progressive metal progresses all right! Keep up. So far, "If I Could" was thought by me to be your best song, but now I'm sure that "Far From Home" is your strongest piece. Thanks for that major "happy ending" because it really deepens your dark hallowed style with unexpected bright spark of hope that everything will be OK eventually. Brilliant work! Yours truly, from Russia with love)) Favorite track: Far From Home.

about

“Marrow” is a complex album, covering a wide register of genres and expressions – from folk/prog moments to avant garde, from pretty and ballady to challenging modernistic tonality and harshness. With Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s dynamic and powerful vocals on top, as always. Lyricwise, the album is about sticking to the essence of yourself. Your ideas, your thoughts, your values.
To stay true to your roots – your Marrow.

Their most doomy album to date, and at times both heavier and catchier than it’s predecessor “Red in Tooth and Claw”, “Marrow” is a perfect album for those thunderous Autumn storms.
Produced by BP M. Kirkevaag & Madder Mortem, mastered by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid.
